FAQs

You know all about FIGMENT… You’re ready to dive in… but you still have some questions! Hopefully the below will answer everything, and feel free to email us at [email protected] if you have additional questions.

What are the hours of FIGMENT?
On July 26 FIGMENT runs from 10am- 11pm
On July 27 Figment starts at 10am and goes til 6pm.

Can I bring a car onto Toronto Island?
No. We expect a lot of people to come out for FIGMENT, and all vehicles getting on and off the Island during the event are for artists / event production, and have all been pre-registered.

Can I bring my bike / roller blades onto Toronto Islands?
Absolutely! The islands are very bike/wheel friendly… but you can easily get around by foot, rent a bike from Island Bicycle Rental, or take a tour of the other islands by the Island Tram Tour.

What if it rains?
FIGMENT is a rain or shine event.  If it looks like it’s drizzling, you may want to bring an umbrella or remember what it was like to be a kid and play in the rain.

How do I get to Olympic Island? Where does the ferry leave from? What’s the ferry schedule? Is the ferry really free?
Check out our page on Getting There, and all your questions shall be answered!

What are the deadlines?
Key projects will be given placement on the island on a rolling basis. If you have a large project or a project that requires specific placement or infrastructure, please submit it as soon as possible so that we can accommodate it. The final deadline for project submission will be updated soon. When it comes time to submit a project, please click here.

I didn’t submit my art / project before the deadline. Can I still bring it?
We would love you to bring your art and projects. However, please note that you cannot bring anything that needs to be staked into the ground, be connected to a power source, plotted on the map, or scheduled for a performance area. Our call for participation for those types of projects is about to open. For more information on how to submit a project, please click here.

To have advance notice of submissions opening and deadlines for next year, please join our email list.

How can I find out what will be at FIGMENT?
You can look at (and print) an event map and schedule / list of projects and artists from our website in advance. Because we are a Leave No Trace event, we will not print individual maps or schedules for participants. If you are more comfortable with a map in your hand, you may want to print it out.

Is it really free?
Yes, FIGMENT is 100% free for everyone to participate and enjoy. We run entirely on donations, and we welcome any contribution you are able to make.

What should I bring?
You should plan to bring water and a picnic, for sure. For other items, please see our “What to Bring” page!

What is Leave No Trace (LNT)?
Have you ever been to an event where you see garbage lying everywhere and people walk by it hoping that if they ignore it somehow it will magically disappear?  Leave no trace means…

  • We work together to leave the park space in the same condition or better than when we arrived.
  • You try to pack in and pack out anything you bring; even if there are garbage cans!  Remember garbage cans can only hold so much garbage and if everyone uses them, they will overflow.
  • If a garbage can is full and you can’t pack out your garbage, hold onto it until you can find an empty garbage can somewhere else on the islands.
  • MOOP!  Be a MOOP ambassador (Matter Out OPlace) by…
    • Picking up any garbage you walk by and placing it in a garbage bin or packing it out with you.
    • Educating others.  There is nothing wrong with politely explaining the importance of Leave No Trace to others who have accidentally dropped garbage or are creating MOOP.

By helping with leave no trace you make our volunteers working end of day Sunday much happier as they can go home earlier if there is less garbage to pick up and deal with.  The last thing hard working volunteers wish to do is clean up garbage at the end of an event.
